Choosing the right embryo has always been one of the biggest challenges in in vitro fertilization (IVF). Doctors often rely on visual assessments, experience, and a limited set of biological indicators. KAIST believes there is room for something much more precise.

Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) have received international recognition for a new imaging technique that could reshape how embryos and oocytes are evaluated during IVF. Their work earned the Basic Science Award for Poster Presentation at the 2026 Annual Meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), one of the world’s largest reproductive medicine conferences.

KAIST Combines 3D Imaging With Time-Lapse Analysis

The technology is not another AI model promising miracles. Instead, it improves the quality of biological data before any prediction is even made.

The KAIST team combined continuous time-lapse imaging with quantitative three-dimensional analysis using holotomography, an imaging method that captures the internal structure of living cells without causing damage. Rather than taking a single snapshot, the system observes how embryos develop over time and measures subtle structural changes that would otherwise be difficult to detect.

That matters because embryo development is a moving process. A single image rarely tells the whole story.

A Non-Invasive Way to Predict Embryo Development

Traditional embryo evaluation often depends on morphology and the judgment of fertility specialists. While experienced embryologists remain essential, subjective interpretation can produce varying results.

KAIST’s approach aims to introduce more measurable data into that process. The researchers say their platform can monitor live embryos continuously, analyze them in three dimensions, and estimate developmental potential without physically altering or damaging the cells. If validated through additional studies, that could help fertility clinics make embryo selection more consistent and potentially improve IVF success rates.

Why the ESHRE Award Matters

ESHRE attracts more than 10,000 reproductive medicine professionals every year, making it one of the most influential conferences in fertility research.

The Basic Science Award is not handed out simply because a paper looks interesting. Submitted studies first go through abstract reviews before finalists present their work in person. Judges then evaluate both the scientific contribution and the research team’s ability to defend their findings during live discussions.

This year, KAIST postdoctoral researcher Dr. Chungha Lee, working in Professor YongKeun Park’s research group, received the award after presenting the team’s research in London.

Beyond IVF, the Technology Could Influence Cell Imaging

Although the immediate focus is reproductive medicine, the underlying imaging technology has broader possibilities.

Holotomography already allows scientists to examine living cells in three dimensions without fluorescent labels or invasive preparation. The recognition at ESHRE suggests that combining this capability with quantitative analysis may open new research directions beyond fertility, including developmental biology and live-cell imaging.

Commercial adoption will still require further validation and clinical testing. Even so, the award highlights growing interest in imaging technologies that generate richer biological information while reducing the need for invasive procedures.

The Bigger Picture for Fertility Technology

IVF has steadily become more data-driven. Clinics already use time-lapse incubators, genetic testing, and advanced imaging to improve treatment decisions.

KAIST’s work fits into that trend, but with a different emphasis. Rather than replacing specialists, it gives them another layer of objective information when evaluating embryo quality. That could help fertility care become more standardized across clinics while preserving the expertise of embryologists who ultimately make treatment decisions.

Whether this technology becomes part of routine IVF workflows remains to be seen. Winning one of reproductive medicine’s top research awards, however, puts it firmly on the global scientific radar.
