Google is taking its age-assurance technology beyond a limited regional launch and putting it in the hands of Android developers worldwide.
The company plans to expand the Google Play Age Signals API to Australia and Canada by mid-August, followed by a broader global rollout before the end of 2026. The tool is already available in Brazil.
The idea is fairly direct. Apps can receive a user’s age range without asking for an exact birth date or collecting more personal information than they actually need.
That could change how developers handle younger users, particularly inside social, entertainment, gaming and media apps.
Google Gives Developers an Age Range, Not a Birth Date
The Google Age Signals API allows parents to share a child’s age bracket with participating apps. A developer might receive a signal showing that a user falls within the 16-to-17 age range, for example, rather than seeing the person’s full date of birth.
Adults can also choose to share their age when an app requests it.
Developers can then use that information to adjust content, features, privacy settings or other parts of the app experience. Google says the system was designed to preserve privacy while still giving apps a reliable signal they can use to apply age-appropriate safeguards.
An entertainment platform could limit certain material for younger users. A social app might apply stricter messaging controls. A basic weather app, meanwhile, probably would not need to make many changes at all.
Google is leaving those decisions largely to developers rather than forcing every app to apply the same restrictions.
Parents Control Age Sharing Through Family Link
Google will manage the feature through its Family Link parental control service.
Parents can enter and manage their child’s age range from one central dashboard instead of changing the same setting separately inside every app. Apps that integrate the Google Age Signals API can then receive the selected age signal.
Nothing is shared automatically.
Parents must choose to provide the age range, and they can update or disable the setting later. That opt-in approach matters because age-verification systems often trigger questions about privacy, data collection and how much information technology companies should hold about children.
Once a parent enables the setting, supported apps can move a child into a more suitable experience without another long setup process.
Less repetition for parents. More responsibility for developers.
The API Does Not Decide What Every App Should Block
Google is not building a single rulebook that treats every Android app in the same way.
The company argues that different apps carry different levels of risk. A calculator, weather service or note-taking tool does not need the same protections as a video platform, dating service or social network.
Developers will decide how to use the age signal inside their own products.
That flexibility could make the system easier to adopt, but it also means the results may vary sharply from one app to another. Some developers may use the information to redesign major parts of the experience. Others may apply only limited restrictions.
The API supplies the signal. It does not automatically make an app safe.
Google Builds on Existing Child-Safety Controls
The Age Signals API will sit alongside Google Play’s existing family safety features.
Google already requires apps aimed at children and families to follow additional policies. Developers can also use tools such as Restrict Minor Access to limit whether younger users can discover certain apps through Google Play.
Family Link gives parents control over screen-time limits, app download approvals and PIN-protected content filters.
The new API pushes some of that protection deeper into the apps themselves. Instead of relying only on store-level controls, developers can change what users see after they open an app.
That is where age-assurance technology starts to become more consequential.
App Stores Face Growing Pressure to Protect Minors
Google’s rollout arrives as governments and regulators place heavier pressure on app stores and online platforms to identify younger users and reduce their exposure to harmful content.
Apple has also introduced age-assurance tools that allow developers to receive an age range without gaining access to a user’s exact birth date.
The direction is becoming clear. App stores are no longer being treated as simple download marketplaces. Lawmakers increasingly expect them to play a role in age checks, parental controls and child-safety enforcement.
That creates a difficult technical problem.
Companies need enough information to recognise when a user may be a minor, but collecting detailed identity documents or birth records can introduce a different set of privacy and security risks.
Age ranges offer a middle ground. They reveal less than an exact date of birth while still giving developers something practical to work with.
Android Developers Will Need to Decide How Far to Go
The global rollout does not automatically mean every Android app will start using age signals.
Developers still need to integrate the API and decide what should happen when their app receives a younger age range. That may involve changing recommendation systems, communication features, advertising, content access or account settings.
Larger platforms will probably face the most scrutiny. They have more users, more content and more ways for children to encounter material that was not designed for them.
Smaller developers have another concern: implementation time.
Adding the API is only the first step. Teams must create separate experiences, test the restrictions and make sure their systems respond correctly when parents change or withdraw age-sharing permissions.
Google plans to bring the technology to Australia and Canada by mid-August 2026. The rest of the world is expected to gain access later in the year.
