Google adds AI features across Gmail experience

Google is rolling out new Gemini AI features inside Gmail to help users manage email more efficiently. The update introduces tools that summarize conversations, highlight important messages, and assist with writing replies directly in the inbox.

Smarter inbox organization

Gmail now uses Gemini AI to surface important emails automatically. The system analyzes incoming messages and brings time sensitive or action related emails to the top. This helps users focus on messages that need attention instead of scrolling through a full inbox.

Thread summaries and context

One of the main additions is automatic summaries of long email threads. Users can see a short overview of a conversation without reading every message. Gemini can also answer questions about past emails, such as decisions made or dates discussed, based on inbox content.

Writing and reply assistance

Gemini adds writing support inside the Gmail compose window. Users can ask the AI to draft replies, rewrite messages, or adjust tone. Suggested replies are generated using the context of the conversation, allowing faster responses to routine emails.

Improved search inside Gmail

Search within Gmail now supports natural language queries. Instead of typing keywords, users can ask questions to locate specific information from past emails. This makes it easier to find details in large inboxes with years of messages.

Availability and access

Some features are rolling out gradually and may first appear for users in selected regions. Certain advanced tools may require paid Google AI subscriptions, while basic AI summaries and inbox improvements will expand more widely over time.

Privacy controls

Google said personal email data is not used to train AI models. Users can control or disable Gemini features through settings. The company emphasized that AI operates within existing privacy protections.

The Gemini update turns Gmail into a more assistive email platform. By summarizing conversations, prioritizing messages, and supporting writing tasks, Google aims to reduce inbox overload and save users time.
